About The Heroes of Azeroth Expansion

October 2006 won't just be remembered for the introduction of cross-realm battlegrounds and the intense, objective-based world PvP in Eastern Plaguelands and Silithus (just kidding), but it also marks the date that UpperDeck Entertainment (UDE) released the first installment of the WoW Trading Card Game (TCG). Heroes of Azeroth was an instant success. The first print run was sold out within days, and therefore UDE had to commission a second and much larger printing run. By combining an established, well-loved and rich lore of the WoW universe, with the wildly successful online game, UDE and Blizzard had found a winning combination.

Fast-forward to today and the WoW TCG has just received the seventh expansion named Blood of Gladiators. One of the ongoing contributors to the WoW TCG success story are the randomly inserted loot cards. In this months article the focus will be on the first WoW TCG release Heroes of Azeroth, and its three loot cards in ascending rarity:

  • Landro Longshot
  • Thunderhead Hippogryph
  • Saltwater Snapjaw

The most common of the three loot cards is Landro Longshot, the in-game Azerothian representative of the <The Black Flame> and the supplyer of all TCG loot. Located on the lower parts of the Booty Bay docks, he should be easily recognised due to the fact that he has a distinctive purple shirt and two body guards wearing Tabards of Flame next to him. And with a Landro Longshot loot card, one can redeem said epic [Tabard of Flame] tabard for oneself. The Landro Longshot loot card appears once in about 121 Heroes of Azeroth boosters, however this is speculation only and should not be relied upon. Typical secondary market values for this loot are under $20 USD. Prices have remained steady but are slowly dropping due to Blizzard introducing many more epic Tabards into the online game.

The middle rarest loot card is the Thunderhead Hippogryph which redeems for the epic non-Combat pet Hippogryph Hatchling. Back when Landro Longshot made his first appearance on the docks of Booty Bay, a [Hippogryph Hatchling] pet could be seen accompanying Landro. Around $90 USD is the average price for this loot card, which is about a 70% rise since the introduction of pet related achievements in November 2008 last year.

The Saltwater Snapjaw is the third and final loot from Heroes of Azeroth TCG, making it the rarest and therefore the most expensive loot to acquire. This card redeems for the [Riding Turtle] mount which has the unique ability to be riden without requiring any riding skill, yes, a level 1 character can have a distinctive mount to ride. The drawback is that being a typical turtle, it can only manage a base unmounted character running speed. There are ways to increase this speed however, it can be benefit from all mount speed increase enchants, spells, and items such as Mithril Spurs and Crusader Aura. This loot is extremely rare and may be found 1 in 484 booster packs and commands a secondary market price of around $180 USD. The introduction of the rare Northrend fishable Sea Turtle mount has made a small impact on the average price, however at best it has only lowered prices by 10%.
